Yesterday, you were led to believe (quite insidiously and adeptly I might add) you would be submitting your final research paper. BUT NO. Instead you were forced by your evil, avenging teacher to methodically plumb the depths of your paper to ensure compliance. Many of you caught huge mistakes, and some of you, on the other hand, were redeemed by the integrity of your work (nice going). Additionally, I told you that all the work we reviewed was included in the packet I had provided at the beginning of our research paper assignment. So what did you learn from this experience?
Post 1: Please relate your experience in reviewing and correcting your research paper. What will you take away from it? What will you change next time. How do you think you will change when you get to next year's English class?
Post 2: Please respond (with details) to the post of another students.
As always, posts must evidence authenticity, reflection and original thought. Please spend some time with this.(20 points)

Although I was informed of this change a bit late, I luckily was able to edit my paper in full for a second time. I was grateful to have received this opportunity because it probably improved the grade that I would have had without a second edit. What this taught me is that I should always be prepared to turn in a fully edited paper and not just hope that my teacher will unexpectedly let us edit for one last time. This will most likely never happen again in any of my English classes for the rest of my life in school. Next time, I will go over my work before I print it, even if it is 2 A.M.! For next year's English class, I will be more diligent with editing my work for every draft, not only the final, because I won't be getting a second chance with my grade.
ReplyDeleteI saw that I really did not follow a lot of the MLA rules. I had a lot of little mistakes that seemed insignificant but turned out to be very important if I want my paper to be in MLA. I think I can do a lot better if I follow everything in the handouts, not just the big main ideas, but also the small insignificant ones. I think when I go into English 11 honors next year, I will try even harder to be as precise as possible in all the rules so that I will do better on my essays.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Danielle. She says that she wants to be able to turn in her paper fully prepared on the day its due. A lot of the time, I slack off and do not do all the work on the my papers because I think that I might have more time to correct it later even if it is due the next day. I should come in with a complete and good essay on the day it is due.
ReplyDeleteI barely looked at the citation requirements for a Research Paper, so I was grateful that I could fix the parenthetical citations. I also added(or at least attempted to add) more matter to my work. Next year I will definitely spend more time on matter and editing, even if I just feel like printing it without a second glance.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kenneth. I think many of us brush off the MLA because we don't think of it as part of our writing, when it really is. It makes the paper more organized and easier to read/write.
ReplyDeleteI was so thankful to have a second chance to edit my paper; I ended up uncharacteristically catching huge mistakes I had made. Goging through it at the rate we did in class, methodically and as a process made me catch various errors that I did not catch when I had gone through myself to edit it. For example, I had used "we" or "ourselves" over eleven times, and did not catch it. I gained very much from this experience, and now know the more detailed mental checklist I need to be going through prior to turning in my paper. I als need to use the sources we are given; that was a huge lesson learned. Next year's english class I now know to be much more diligent and thourough with my work;I think I tend to get a little lazy with some of it in this class because I tend to get As, but that may not be the case next year and I will need to try harder.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Codi about wanting just to print out the paper without a second glance, and then having to make an effort to add more matter to the work. I agree that next year it will be necessary to add extra time for editing and the matter as well; I hint at the matter but I need to take it to the next level in my papers, as were the comments on my last essay.
ReplyDeleteI was so grateful that we could have edited our essays a second time before we actually turned it in. Even though I had a teacher edit my essay, she still made errors and did not catch two of mine. I was surprised that everything that I needed to know to edit my essay and follow the MLA format was in my packet. I totally forgot that we had even had it in the first place. I will try to remember next time to use that packet because it actually helped me out with the formatting a lot. For next year, I will use the packet to help me and remember to redit my essay after I have let my peers edit it. Even though peer editing helps, they do not always catch all my mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Alissa. Going over the essay in class slowly made me catch so many errors that I didn't notice in the first place. I was so happy that we got another day to edit the essay before turning it in because my last essay had so many errors on it. I'm like Alissa where I tend to slack off, but after this essay, lesson learned. I will look out for my errors more.
ReplyDeleteI was so lucky to have annother day to do my research paper. I did not spend much time on my works cited and citations. When we went over it in class i made tons of mistakes, thank god I could fix them. Next time I have a research paper I will make sure all my citations and works cited are perfect. I also learned i needed to do more say mean matters. I barely had any on the thursday we were supposed to turn it in. That next night I got to put some in my essay. None of my future teacher will probably not give us an extra day on an essay. So next time I need to read over my essay and make sure everytning is pefect.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Danielles post. I did not read over my essay completly and check to make sure everything was correct because of how late
ReplyDeleteI finished my essay. I agree with Katie. I did not even open the packet before thursday to check if my works cited and citations were correct. That was a big mistake, i need to use all the sources that are given to me to my advantage.
I agree with Derek's post, because I felt lucky as well. I also agree that my next research paper should have more of a say/mean/matter structure to the body paragraphs. This is the first legitimate research paper that I have done, and I was not exactly sure how to prove my argument with matter based on facts. Like Derek said, next time I will be sure that I know what I'm doing and make sure that my work cited is perfect.
ReplyDeleteI was grateful for the second opportunity to edit my paper. Though I only had two mistakes, one in my works cited and the proper way to start a paper with a quote, I was fortunate enough to be able to correct these before I turned in my paper. I was completely unaware of how to format a quote, when it starts a paper, so thanks to the extra day of editing, I could fix the problem and save myself from getting a lot of points taken off. I am very appreciative of the extra day provided to us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alissa's comment on tending to get lazy. I believe I have started to get a little lazy, because we have done so many essays, and the year is nearing to an end. I don't necessarily love writing essays, so every time a new essay is assigned, I get a little more lazy, unfortunately. I do agree that next year, I am going to need to try harder and I am appreciative that this year has helped me prepare for what's to come. I know that I need to make sure my essay is perfect before I turn it in, and this opportunity has shown me how lucky we were to receive an extra day.
ReplyDeleteAnisha Tyagi- I was extremely ecstatic when I found out that we received a second chance to edit our papers. I know that I made some major mistakes in the works cited after spending the class period going over the packet. This made me realize that it is important to use all of the materials that teachers give. I was so happy because it seemed that the blue packet was a cheat sheet with all of the answers. Some changes I would have made this paper would be to get everything figured out ahead of time and use my resources. Next year, I am going to make sure that I use all resources given to me by the teacher and start assignments ahead of time. I really appreciate the extra day given.
ReplyDeleteAfter correcting my paper on Thursday I realized how I would of potentially gotten a low grade on it if I did not get the chance to have an extra day. Some of my MLA was off, which was especially dissapointing because the answers were all in the blue packet that you gave us. This experience has led me to realize that I need to utilize the tools you give us. Also, I need to step up and actually take the time to look through packets and you should not have to tell us everything when you gave it to us already. Next year, I believe I am going to become a more mature and independent student. I will become more responsible by taking all the tools you provide us and make sure that when an essay is "due" it will be as perfect as I can get it. I know next year my teacher will not have so much mercy on students, so I need to step it up and start pushing myself on essays to make them the best I can possibly make them
ReplyDeleteAnisha's post made me realize that I did not mention what I would change in my first post. I would change my whole strategy on the essay. I believe I needed to take things slower instead of just researching loads of websites on the internet that I never even used in the essay. I should have developed my thesis and body paragraphs and from that researched qoutes that supported my thesis because how I went about the research paper was at times overwhelming. I agree with anisha though that I am so thankful and appreciative for the extra day and that definetly the extra day taught, I believe all of period 2, that if you give us a "cheat sheet" we should take full advantage of it.
ReplyDeleteAnisha Tyagi- I definitely agree with Kenneth because next year it is going to be crucial to fix all the small mistakes because those can end up costing lots of points. Also, about the MLA rules, he is right when he says little things make it or do not make it MLA. The extra day was nice for the minor corrections that needed to be made. I did enjoy writing this paper and learning all about the different rules and ways to write the paper.
ReplyDeleteWhen we corrected our research paper in class I caught some errors that I did not see the night before when I was proof reading it. For the most part I had everything that we went over in class but my conclusion did not restate the thesis. I also found that I had random facts through my essay and I put matter into it. Now I know the things I have to look for before I turn in my essay next time. For next year’s English class I will take the rough drafts more seriously so when the final draft is due it is not as much work the night before.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anisha. When the teacher hands out a cheat sheet with all of the answers, use it. I completely forgot about that packet until we started to review our papers and refer to the packet. And next year we have to take advantage of the resources given to make the essays better.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I would like to say THANK YOU for giving us another day. I caught some major mistakes in my work. For example, my works cited page had quite a few “n.p”s in it and I had to get rid of all of them. Second, yes, my conclusion was a summary of my entire essay but I had left out a major part. My thesis! I caught that mistake when you had asked us to look over our papers Thursday. There were some grammar mistakes I caught on to then too. I changed all my errors as soon as I went back home. I learned that I should never ever turn in a paper, (no matter how late it is) without reading over it at least once. I also think that it helps to keep the rubric and prompt in front of you before you print it so you can check all that you have and all that you still need before actually turning it in.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Grace because after rereading my essay Thursday in class, I was pretty disappointed in myself. If I had turned it in that day, I know I would gotten at least a letter grade below what I will get now. My MLA and Works Cited was also way off, even if you had given us the blue Works Cited Packet. Next time, I will just have to utilize my time properly and more importantly than that, I will have to utilize what you give us. As you have said before, “Don’t work hard, work smart.” For the next essay, I will have to work smarter.
ReplyDeleteAs you were pointing out the common mistakes we would be able to find on our paper I wondered why this activity had not happened the day before. I soon realized after class that it was to show how we do not pay attention to our writing as much as we should. I learned that once I finish typing my essays I press print without several proof reads. This experiment proved that we do not take our time in our work, instead rush to finish. With my one look over the night before the original due date I did not catch the mistakes you pointed out in class. I think that because we are the writers it is harder to find errors and therefore you pointing out the errors we might have is extremely helpful. Overall, this was successful and saved me numerous points so thank you Ms. Gerber!
ReplyDeleteOn Thursday in class, I realized that I had some errors in the works cited, namely n.p. and that one of my citations was out of alphabetical order. Furthermore, I noticed a major grammatical ambiguity in my conclusion while reading through. Also, since I was up until 2:30AM the night before working on other assignments, I had not the opportunity to read through my essay for logical flow or content. The extra day gave me the opportunity to do this as well as correct the grammatical and formatting errors. Since it is unlikely that such an opportunity to work on the essay an extra day will ever present itself again, especially in English 11 Honors, I have learned to spend that extra hour on the weekends checking formatting and logic, as well as make time for extra peer reviews with willing editors. Next time, I will also try to refine my writing process, as well as my research, and find advice from the right experts on my topic, so that I have more time to edit. Since most English 11 Honors essays are in class, I will have to make my writing process more efficient, and develop protocols that will allow my to plan and write faster, while maintaining the logic and formatting of my essay.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Codi because my citations and works cited were far away from correct. I had some citations in my works cited that i didn't even use in my essay. I am glad we were given extra time to finish these mistakes because i would have received a lower grade.
ReplyDeleteWhen reviewing and correcting the research paper on Thursday, I had found minor mistakes on my paper that I had not known I had to do (such as putting a colon before a long quote, etc.). Although, I learned that we all were not prepared and should have looked at all of our resources before calling our essays "perfect" and printing them out. Next time, I will review all possible resources to check to make sure that my essay is as perfect as it can be. In next years English class, I will be more careful when writing my essays and will review them to make sure all my points are accurate to making it a proper paper. I learned that there is more to writing an essay than just the basics.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kallyn. I think that we did not pay enough attention to the details of the research paper as we were supposed to. Rushing things in our essay will do no good. Taking time and writing an awesome essay with concentration will get a good grade. This taught us to make sure to catch our mistakes before we turn in our final draft. Ms. G destroyed the periodic table of elements because the only element she believes in is the element of surprise. There is no theory of evolution, only a list of animals that Ms. G has allowed to survive.
ReplyDeleteStern - you're nuts. And I like it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tanzia. My works cited was my worst area in terms of formatting errors, especially
ReplyDelete"n.p."s, which occurred on every other citation. Also, some of my parenthetical citations needed work. My conclusion also needed work, although it had a faulty clincher, rather than the restatement of the thesis itself. The formatting packet helps, especially on the works cited, in which the formatting is especially confusing. I have arrived at the same conclusion, that it is important to reread the paper several times before turning it in.
Well I was not here the day that we went over the Research Paper and were told we could turn it in the next day, but I think I was still able to benefit from the experience. With the extra day I was able to go through and review things another time as well as try to figure out how to make my works cited fit the format. I've also learned that it would have been much more helpful if I had toughened it out and gone to class despite being sick. In the future I think I will spend more time reviewing my papers to make sure I take full advantage of the time we are given to work on them. I think next year I will continue to try to work hard because it's getting to be the times when everything is really important.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alex. Mostly my errors were in the works cited and some grammatical but the extra day allowed me to fix them. In the end those small errors can add up so I was glad to have the opportunity to be able to go back and correct them. It is definitely worth taking extra time to do these things so I was especially grateful for addition time. I also agree that it is very helpful to have additional editors edit so that you can get more than one opinion on the paper as opposed to the same editor catching the same mistake every time. You have to mix it up sometimes.
ReplyDeleteOn Thursday while we were all reviewing our research papers which should have been good to go for turning in, I found several mistakes on my paper. There were mistakes such as the mistake on my works cited where I forgot to put the citations in alphabetical order. Although my mistakes were minor, they still matter if I am going for a good grade. This is why the oppurtunity given to class by Ms. Gerber saved me along with many others. Next year along with the rest of this year I will need make sure I correct every mistake on my papers so that I will not look at it on the day it is due and realize there are still mistakes that should not be there.
ReplyDeleteWhen I found out that we were going to have another night on the essay I definitely had mixed feelings about the whole thing. A part of me was thanking God because I knew that I did not read through my essay enough before printing it out, but the other part just wanted to break down and cry. I felt so angry at myself the night before for not completely finishing my essay to the fullest over Spring Break like I should have. Then, after deciding to pretty much completely change my whole essay I had to stay up until almost two in the morning finishing it. I do not know if this decision helped or hurt me in the long run, I just know that I was really happy to get the essay off my shoulders and then I heard I had to fix it even more that night and I felt a little over whelmed at first. Surprisingly enough on Thursday in class, I did not find anything but I few minor changes to make in my essay, like taking out the n.p. As hard as the research essay was for me, I found out that I actually did really well with the MLA. This experience taught me that editing an essay is almost as important as writing it. But the most important thing that I learned from this experience was that I need to figure out exactly what I am doing with my essay before the 2nd draft is due, not before the final is due.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andrew because most people who did realize they had mistakes last minute figured their paper was "perfect" upon printing it out. This was the same for me, but there is so much to make a mistake on that it is necessary to check the paper over and over until every word, sentence, and rules of the paper have been examined. This would help prevent future mistakes from occuring and the last minute fixes.
ReplyDeleteafter being given a second time to edit my essay i found that i had made various critical errors, one of which was the fact that i had not finished writing my title. other errors included multiple first person pronouns, minor imperfections in the works cited and a few MLA mishaps. had i known that all the information that i would need was in the packet handed out earlier this year i would have definitely made less mistakes with the MlA formatting. as for my next essay, assuming there is one, i will focus on the little things just as much as matter and staying with my topic.
ReplyDeletesincerely,
cameron j rose
On Thursday, as we went through everything that should be included on our research papers, I was internally freaking out. The only thing I was completely satisfied with was my Works Cited. I felt like I had no matter for my quotes at all. As we went through each quote putting "yes" or "no" I put "no" for each and every quote. It felt horrible. I had no confidence in my paper. I went home, changed a lot of key points, and managed for it to be more than 4 pages long. I feel confident and relieved. Next time, I need to pay attention to every detail. I had two gerunds in there still so thank goodness we went over it!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kallyn. We usually rush into printing our papers without a few proof reading sessions. We get so excited that we're done and it's off our back when we don't realize all our minor and major mistakes. It's important to recognize these errors before we turn in our papers. It's tedious, but I will love myself for doing it when I get that A on my paper. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Danielle said. I think that I definitely rush the printing part of the essay writing process. Once I am finished writing my essay I feel so relieved and ready to be done that I do not read over more than one maybe two times. I think that it is important for me to get my essays done earlier so I can just revise mine the week before the essay is due. When writing essays especially, I get really restless and I need to give my self more time to revise so I don't need to stay up so late writing an essay that I don't even know is perfect or not.
ReplyDeleteMy experience in reviewing and correcting my research paper was eye opening. I realized all the things I was doing right, but more importantly I realized what I was doing wrong. While going over the essay before “turning it in” I was able to reflect on all the requirements and check if I had met them or not. What I will take away from this experience is to always read thoroughly the material that teachers give me to help me on the task at hand. I was given a packet to make writing the essay easier and I skimmed it not really paying attention to it, I realized that if I had read it and applied what it said that the whole process would have been much easier. What I will change next time is that I will read the materials given to me thoroughly and use it to my advantage to make the writing process easier, and to help me get a good idea on what needs to be in the essay. When I get to next years English class I will change my work ethic. I will not push large packets to the side because I am too lazy to read them; instead, I will take time to read and learn from the information that my teacher gives me because now I know it will benefit me in the end.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kenneth. We usually just think about the big main ideas and push the small insignificant ones aside, we do not realize that the small insignificant ones add up to equal as much points as a main idea. If we paid as much attention to the big ideas as we did to the small details I think that it would help a lot. I also agree of what he says about the handouts, if we follow everything that the handouts tell us to do we will do better on the essays because they tell us what to do and how to do it.
ReplyDeleteSo basically, I was saved by having an extra day. I saw HUGE mistakes on my paper. What i will take from this experience is to look at all my resources/ directions. Ms. Gerber was right about the MLA packet. It had all the corrections and answers to my questions for MLA formatting. In next years English class i will make sure to manage my time wisely, because i know i will have no time to waste.
ReplyDeleteIn being given an extra day to review my essay, I noticed how poorly my formatting was and I was able ro fix my essay, which helped me greatly. I am grateful for the review of our papers which we did in class, for it taught me what i had done wrong and so I was able to fix it. I took away from it how to properly do MLA formatting and also how to better evaluate my papers in order to make them better. Next time I write an essay I will be sure to remeber my flaws in MLA and attempt to follow MLA formatting perfectly. I will also add more persuasion and organize my essay in a more precise manner. For next years English class, I will be more prepared for essay-writing and I shall be able to write in MLA formatting easily.
ReplyDeleteDaniel is right, I also realized what I did right and that is great, but our focus is upon what we did wrong. Also, if we read through the packet which Ms. Gerber gave us, we could learn much from all of the knowledge provided to us in that packet. By basically using the knowledge given to us in our MLA packet, we could improve our essays enormously.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the experience of being able to correct my essay on extra day was great! At first I felt bad for myself because I had all of these red marks on my paper. However, the GREAT Ms. Gerber gave us one more day. I believe that sonly some of the corrections were instrumental. Someone told me that my essay was good when I knew that it was just there. However, that can be corrected by me by going to someone who cares to correct my essay. From this, my main lesson learned was that you can never have enough research. I had plenty and still had loopholes that needed to be filled with research. As Ms. Gerber said, the 7 sources was a minimum, but to have a top-tier research paper, more were needed. Next time, I will pick a topic that is more popular, so that research is easier to find. Next year going into English, I will learn to spread out my time even more. a first, I did not save all of my research for one day. However, if I chose to spread it out more it could have been even more effective.
ReplyDeleteSarah Manning-
ReplyDeleteMy experience with the paper was a long an hard battle. After my second draft was complete I decided I could do a much better job if I just started all over. It was...interesting. After I had a set idea of where to go it was much easier to fill in the blanks such as MLA styling. And though I tried to use the time to my advantage, I did not use the materials Gerber gave me. This was quite a stupid thing which I think many of the class fell victim to.
I learned that if a teacher gives you something and says something to the effect of "Use it. It will help you avoid stupid mistakes" they probably know what they are talking about. I hope that through this experience I will learn to take advantage of things like that wonderful packet of MLA guidelines. I believe that through practice and adherence to the E11H teachers, formating will come more naturally to the class.
I agree with Madeline, the works cited needed the most work, no pun intended. If Ms. Gerber had not given us that extra day, my works cited alone could have brought my grade on the essay down. I also agree with Kenneth. The MLA is a beast! There are so many rules and it is hard to follow. The extra day helped me follow these rules a little bit more
ReplyDeleteBefore I walked into class I was feeling confident. I felt like my paper was well planed and well written. However, once Ms. Gerber started to go over some of the requirements, I realized that I had neglected to add many things, along with forgetting to take a few place holders out. The experience helped me, and from now on, instead of just reviewing previous edited drafts, I am also going to go over all of the relevant handouts and packets. Leaving in something like a typo in the title is unacceptable at the next level, and I need to fix any problems like that before I make a habit of it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Joseph.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest problem was my formatting, or lack there of. I ignored MLA on every draft, and my attempt to completely format the entire essay before the final draft is a ridicules idea. Next time, I will make sure my FIRST draft is in perfect MLA, and build the following drafts off of it.
i agree with alex, the extra day was a great amount of help. it too helped my essay's formatting and language in general. i too was up[ late and unable to check my essay for logical content. i only wish that i had realized that the MLA packet had the majority of the info i had needed for corrections
ReplyDeleteSarah Manning-
ReplyDeleteWhile scanning through this blog, everyone is saying basically the same thing. It's that we were focused on the essay as a whole and didn't pay attention to the little things, regardless of how well the MLA was. This essay was a huge deal. Besides the fact that it's worth a lot of points, there's the research, the opinions, the thesis, and mashing it all together with the elements of reader's workshop. But I also found this as a round about way to inform us not to forget the basic parts of an essay. We have been taught about making our essays bigger and badder, but we need to remember to keep them readable and set to protocol.
I'd also like to comment to Stern that the only surprise was the extra day to correct it. We had everything we needed at our disposal, but few used it.
Indeed, I was fortunate enough to review my research paper a second time. A second chance at life, so to say. I simplified my works in order to make sure the reader, whether it be a teacher or a student. Is it perfect? Of course not. Yet, I went back and made certain my essay would be readable. The problem with my essays is how it tends to get overly complicated with wordiness, and such complexity is much too much. So, like I said, I went back and simplified TONS of run-ons. Whew, I am grateful enough for the oppurtunity of a second chance. Most certainly, there will never be another chance like that for the rest of my school days.
ReplyDeleteWhen I head to English 11 HONORS next year(thats right, HONORS, Gerber, HONORS), I will make sure to take what Ive learned this year (simplifying, S/M/M, MLA, etc) and use it next year. I will NOT be subjected to the torment of the pathetic purgatory that is REGULARS. *shivers* I shutter at the thought. Hopefully next year, my essays will be easy to read, yet hard to put down. Just get to my points.
I shall look through Andrew and Kallyn's point of view, and agree how rushing just to get the paper done is suicide on the first degree term. You have to take time to actually have ALL your arguments detailed perfectly in the paper. You must have your points clear and concise, and your argument must be thorough. Also, your argument must be easy to understand throughout the paper. You also need to have an eye in terms of catching mistakes. Ultimately, it is up to you to make that decision. Be analytical.
ReplyDeleteI would be amiss if I havent mentioned how I got a good chuckle with Andrew's last sentence, but that mention is rather trivial.
Closing in on the turn in date of an essay, i begin to feel great amounts of stress. I use the fact that my stress will be relieved on the due date as a motivational tool. I found that this generous gift actually hurt me much more than it helped me by trading the last of my sanity for ten or so extra points. I do appreciate the opportunity, but i feel that since i was lucky enough to be correct for the most part on my MLA, the redemption day really prolonged my suffering more than it saved my grade.
ReplyDeleteLooking at cam's reflection i do acknowledge that the redemption was a blessing for some, for some silly mistakes may have been missed upon first revision. I also see that some agree with me that our load of stress and emotionally draining previous night was proven to be meaningless by this extension. Next year i expect that we will not be given such blessings so i will be sure to be right the first time.
ReplyDeleteThe reviewing and editing in class always helps me, but this time really made a difference. The process of Ms. Gerber actually telling us what to look for in class helps me tremendously. These simple read-throughs saved me numerous points I'm sure. I now know that I must read through my essays like we did in class on Thursday in order to ensure I do not have things such as taboo words, to be verbs, gerunds, or first person. Next year, I will take this style of reviewing my final product in order to ensure it's the best it can be. Sometimes, even though I might think my essay has no taboo, etc, it always finds a way to end up in my essays.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Blake because he said that he felt like he had everything he needed in his essay. However, once we started reading through our essays and Ms. Gerber pointed out specific things to look for, I realized my essay was not so great. I realized not only that I had a first person and taboo words in it, but also that it was a half a page too short! I also had no clue about the different format for a long quote. This extra day saved my grade on this essay. I disagree with Ben just because I think it was really generous of Ms. Gerber to give us an extra day to fix all of our mistakes, and she didn't make us fix our essays that night.
ReplyDeleteAlexander Hoover: When starting my essay I thought there were many mistakes within each line of the essay, but I could not find them, even if I spent hours looking for them. This was me before I even glimpsed at the MLA packet. After looking through it steadily I found many helpful suggestions, and after looking at the packet, I was seeing the errors, my in text citations. If the extra day was not given to us (the class), I think I would have failed miserably. The editing is only so helpful though. But I have learned that not checking for the minor details before-hand, can be completely devastating to the over-all essay.
ReplyDeletei feel that reviewing the essay in class was a real eye opener. it shows me that no matter how many times you think you have a perfect essay, there can always be improvements. im personally glad we reviewed in class because it helped me fix key mistakes in my works cited. this expierence lets me know to always triple check my essays before turning them in. next time i will have more friends read and review my essays. next year i plan to keep my blue packet so i always know how to write an essay.
ReplyDeletei agree with derek, say mean matters are really important in essay writing and without them essays would be alot worse. i also agree with andrew when he says that we can never really call our essays "perfect." we always have to make sure to check them amny times to ensure perfction.
