Blog Assignment Eight

Today you took a test in class. How'd that go for you?

I would like two posts:

Post 1: Please tell me what you learned from this experience. Relate both the positive and challenging aspects of your work style.

Post 2: How will this experience inform or change the way you've approached the work in this class?

Note: Again, these posts must be reflective and answer the prompt. This is not a forum for critique about the class, your classmates, or me. I really want to know about you.

  1. Post 1: Please tell me what you learned from this experience. Relate both the positive and challenging aspects of your work style.

From the experience today, I learned that reading is not so pointless as it seems and can actually help you in the long run. Although a lot of teachers will not test you on the material you read the night before some do, and it is always good to be prepared to read for situations like that. It really motivates me to continue to read even though we may or may not be tested on it. However, I think since it was very long reading, I got a little bored after a while and started to pay less attention to what exactly what I was reading. I have a hard time already remembering stories or textbooks that I read not even 5 minutes ago. This definitely taught me to try to focus on what I am reading.

  2. Post 2: How will this experience inform or change the way you've approached the work in this class?

Today, I learned to not only continue to read the material assigned, but also focus and try to comprehend. I can start to lose focus after a while of reading, so I think I will approach reading in a much different way. I think I will try to take breaks in between so when another test like this comes up I can do a lot better.

  3. Todays test was a bit of challenge, because although I am a good student, when I am given time to complete a task, I begin to procrastinate, which ends up with bad results. In the end, out of the seven stories, I read five of them. Even though I read five of them, I did not comprehend all that was in it, and wasn't as prepared as I would have liked to be for the quiz today. From this I've realized, that once I've read the material, I need to re-read, and go over what i've read to be able to comprehend the material.

  4. What I've learned from this experience is that i need to read more carefully. as i kept reading the myths on sunday night, my concentration slowly decreased. By not being able to pay attention to the myths, I did pretty bad on the myths test. If I had concentrated and read the myths like I was suppose to, I wouldn't have had a problem with the test at all.

  5. This experience, has inspired me to become more focused on the task, and to begin when it is assigned, rather than waiting, and not getting the results I want. I've figured out a way for me to understand the material I am reading, so now I've just got to carry out my plan, and be dedicated to this new style. I will now re-read and take detailed notes, because that is the best way for me succeed. This way, I can do much better on tests in the future.

  6. It would motivate me to avoid distractions around me and actually focus on the task at hand. By not concentrating, my grade will show the result of slacking. I could've read the stories over again just to get the idea of it, but I was lazy to. I shouldn't procrastinate either so I could get my work done earlier in time and actually have time to review it

  7. This experience really helped to show me that my current working style for this class is not above par. I finally realized that I am going to have to work harder to get an A. My style was not writing homework down and then just remembering it. That did not work for over the break because I completely forgot what I was supposed to do so I only read the myths for my group. That caused me to not do well on the test because I did not know the material.

    ReplyDelete
  8. From now on this experience has inspired me to wright down all my homework all the time because it will help me to remember what the teacher told us to do. Then I beleive I will do better because then I will not miss assignments and will be better prepared for tests.

  9. Alexander Hoover: From this experience I have learned that reading is highly important, but memorizing the material is equally important. This test was challenging to the inner workings of my memory bank. I read the material on the first night it was assigned, but I failed to refresh my memory again over break. I also realized that briefly reading the material is not actual READING. This has taught me to space out my reading so I can remember the material on a raised standard.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Alexander Hoover: This test flipped a switch in my mind which finally told me that I need to pay attention to what I am reading. In fact I am reading the stories again at this moment in time so I can keep the material fresh in my mind. I will read, and re-read a given story or assignment until I recognize the material.

  11. The test today was a suprise to me. I thought we would discuss them in class today so I breezed through the reading not fully understanding what I am reading. I learned that my work style may be to try and fly through things and that makes me not understand the topic quite as well. My work style may get homework done fast but it does not help me understand and interpret that homework. I learned that I need to read and understand what I am reading by reading the assignments more than once.

  12. Well definetly learned to do my homework and that nothing can ever slip in an honors class. Not only is reading important but really focusing and understanding the material. I am disappointed in my self for not expecting to have a test but I know now now to under estimate you Miss Gerber. :]
This experience has inspired me to try a lot harder so I can earn my grade in this class rather than trying to "slip by".

  13. Post 2: How will this experience inform or change the way you've approached the work in this class?

This experience definetly made me rethink the way I read honmework assignments. From now on I will fully understand the assignment just in case there is a quiz like today. Before sometimes I would just go through the motions in class just to pass by but I now learned to get an A I will need to fully understand everything.

  14. This test has changed the way I thought about English honors. I need to learn to love reading because reading is everything for this class. I know now that when Mrs. Gerber says to do something I must read, understand, and look forward to a test because that is the only way I am going to benefit and do well in this class.

  16. What I've learned from this experience is that reading the myths, or anything in general, is definitely important in an English class. Although I did read the myths when our groups were assigned them, these particular myths I forgot to read over break, not that that's any excuse. Being in an honors class means you have more work and more is expected of you, and I guess today I did not meet the expectation. I learned that any amount of work, whether it's reading or a worksheet, can lead up to bigger assignments or tests which can definitely do harm to your grade if not done well.

  17. This experience has really made me realize that it's time to step up and do what is expected. This is a time where our grades really matter and I need to work to get my grades. I can't expect to get by by doing little or no work. Especially since it is an honors class, I need to understand that effort and dedication is a huge part of what earns the grade.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I forgot to read... Maybe that means I should write down my homework in my binder and then ACTUALLY LOOK AT IT. This brought to my attention that my little book with all the useless information in it serves a purpose: writing down homework! I suppose it's time to not rely solely on the power of my mind... Other than that, I pretty much need to pay attention to what the teacher assigns. I'm pretty comfortable with actually doing the work when I'm doing it

  19. Like most others, It's time to step up to the plate. I realize time management will be crucial very soon so I don't shove in everything last minute (like reading myths). I have to be ready and prepared to keep up my grades because this is the part in life that counts! AMEN

    ReplyDelete
  20. This experience has taught me that taking notes and reading swiftly through things is not always the best route to take. I read every single myth and took notes on it, but I did not thoroughly grasp every detail and concept. During the test I looked at the questions and knew I read them from somewhere, really wishing I could pull my notes out, but some things did not come to me and I just had to guess. I took specific notes but I did not review them recently. Next time I need to read the myths in depth and not worry so much about notes.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Since I read each myth and took notes on it, the only thing I can change is how I read it. I need to read with a mind of wonder and curiosity. I cannot read with a mind of rushing and just trying to get this done. I have done that and now I am pretty sure my grade on this test will reflect the mishaps.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Post 1: Please tell me what you learned from this experience. Relate both the positive and challenging aspects of your work style.

I noticed that I only knew things about two of the myths because they were the most interesting to me. I paid attention to their story more than the others. It was so much reading that I just skimmed through them towards the end, not even thinking that there was the possibility of a pop quiz. I learned that I need to be more diligent with my work and expect the unexpected- try to go above and beyond. The positive aspect of my work style is that I can remember certain things easily, which helps me when taking quizzes and tests.

  23. Post 2: How will this experience inform or change the way you've approached the work in this class?

This experience changed the way I look at work for this class because it woke me up and made me realize that I am in an Honors English class, and that the best should be expected from me. Putting full effort into an assignment is a great habit to get into early in life. It will help me in the long run, like getting into the college that I want to attend. Whenever I am expected to read or study something again in this class, I will do whatever I can to understand the material so that I do well on tests. Applying this habit to my english class will also apply to my other classes, which will then raise my GPA. I am going to do my best from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Today I learned that myths will be an extremely important part of this class and if I want to maintain the A that I have, I am going to have to work even harder in this class. That, in this circumstance, means actually reading and comprehending the myths. A positive is that myths are such fun stories to read that it is truly not going to be that hard to read the ones that Ms. Gerber assigns us. The negative, however, is that sometimes it hard to understand what the storytellers in the websites are saying so that part might be difficult.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This experience has showed me, once again, that I am going to have to really try harder to sustain the grade in this class. The main lesson I learned is that when Ms. G assigns myths or any types of stories to read, read them. And not just some of them… So, that will change and I will actually work on the readings assigned from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Because of this experience I learned that I should not just skim the reading, I should read it and take time to think about each myth.Though I did read I rushed through it just to get it over with now I know to take the time to read for meaning.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This experience changed the way I approached the work in this class because it made me realize that i should treat the most simple assignments such as reading like an assignment that can make or break my grade. I should not think there are easy and hard assignment they should all be treated the same.

    ReplyDelete
  28. From this experience, I learned that I need to read the stories as completely different, seperate entities, and really have an understanding of who did what and when. Apparently, for me, highliting and reading everything in all of the stories is not enough! I also realized that I remembered some of the myths better because I found them more interesting than the others (Atalanta especially). I think maybe jotting down some notes after I read the myths to really show I understand who did what would help me immensely! I need to also keep up with the highliting, that was definitely a positive for me. Like some others on here have said, there is clearly a difference between reading and truly comprehending and being able to apply the information.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fom this experience in our mythology section I have learned that I like to procrastinate when given time to do work, and also that I like a challenge. The work that Ms.Gerber gave us was challenging, fun, and easy to relate to others.

    ReplyDelete
  30. For the future approach to work: I need to be more careful when I read to make sure I am comprehending everything; not simply just reading the information and regurgitating it. I will definitely take more time afterward to really think about the myths and kind of absorb them; I really thought I did a good job of reading them and making sure to pay attention to what I was reading, but the test today pointed out otherwise to me. I look forward to taking my time and seperating out the myths, and thinking and reflecting about them more afterward. Big lesson learned today.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This experience has given me the sense of the kind of work that Ms. Gerber, and the kind of work that i will be receiving in the future. I will approach the class more attentively and cautiously.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I did not like the test, but I suppose it worked in getting me to read over the homework more carefully. I think the test was weighted too heavily but I am now for sure going to keep up in the reading. It was a brutal, but effective way of teaching the class an important lesson. During a break, I normally do not think of my homework until eight at night of the very last day which, in this case, was my sin because it resulted in my failing the test. At least now it will not happen again.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Now I must put more effort into the class because the test made my grade plummet. I will read directions and do what they tell me. No more fun and games.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I learned that I need to step it up. I could have taken this assignment more seriously by reading one story a night instead of cramming it all in my head the night before. Procrastination is NEVER the answer, lesson learned.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Post 2: After coming to the realization today that I am in an Honors class, I am going to approach the class differently. I now know that doing all the assignments is expected. I am going to take the class more seriously from now on. By doing this, I think it will help me stay focused, and in return my grade will benefit. I am just glad I learned this early instead of later(Ex: 11 Honors)

    ReplyDelete
  36. From this experience I learned that I have to read the myths and everything more carefully. I should take my time and not procrastinate to get things done. Responsibility is the key when it comes to homework over break and homework overall. I learned that I need to step it up because I am in a Honors English class.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This will change the way that I approach the class because I know I have to be more serious and responsible in all of my classes. This also taught me that I should put one hundred present effort into everything I don and not just get by in life, succeed in life.

    ReplyDelete
  38. From this experience, I learned that I must read the myths more carefully and analyze their motifs and themes in order to fully understand them. Something positive I did in this situation was to read the stories, but the most challenging part of it all was to remember the details of them. I must concentrate more during my reading in order to remember everything from the myths.

    ReplyDelete
  39. This experience will change the way I approach this class because I have learned that I need to refresh my memory after a week of break and to read the myths later on in the break instead of earlier on. I will also analyze the myths more instead of just reading and skimming them. I have learned that smaller assignments such as reading can help you in the bigger assigments such as the test that we took today. I learned that I need to prepare for every assignment because every action has a reaction and all assigments count for something.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The test today was surprising and challenging, but not impossible. I did miss some minor details in the myths, and mixed up Perseus and Theseus several times, but most of the test centered on main ideas and motifs in the myths. Next time around, I will probably read with the intention of absorbing all the minor details and differences between the myths. I may try to study the myths again before returning to class in case of a test. I will also try to emphasize recurring themes and the general plot in my reading, since the test today seemed to revolve around such ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I've learned to always make sure to read something more than once. I read the myths earlier in the week and didn't read sunday night. I probably should have done that as a precaution. That said, the test wasn't too hard, and I think I did a decent job. I work better with a mixed test, so the abundance of the matching questions was difficult for me.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I will change my approach in this class in that I must change the paradigm through which I read myths. Rather than focusing completely on the general plot itself, it is important to read for motifs and recurring themes, as well as the minor details that may appear on a test sometime.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This experience has taught me to always prepare, even if I think I know the material. I'll probably handle the work a little more carefully, seeing as I mixed up Perseus and Theseus and Oedipus(I have no excuse for that one).

    ReplyDelete
  44. I honestly did spend about 45 minutes overlooking these stories;however, i scanned and did not fully read. I felt i had understood all the stories and when i completed the test i thought i would have recieved an A. Once i had turned in my paper and talked to people after class i realized i had mixed up several people with their myths. I know now to fully read the myths.

    ReplyDelete
  45. From now on i think that laziness towards Ms. Gerber's homework will not happen. I know to fully read the myths and listen to directions

    ReplyDelete
  46. Post 1: This experience taught me that I need to pay more attention to the material that I am reading. I really need to concentrate and focus on the task I am working on. I also realized that reading the stories is not enough it takes time to understand the deeper meaning. "(the matter)" It is more important to analyze the myth than just read it. I know that I will have to work harder in order to keep my grade in the class.

    ReplyDelete
  47. From this experienced I learned to do something when you, Ms. Gerber, tell us to do it. In this case, it was reading myths. I also learned to not procrastinate. I have learned from past experiences the more I tend procrastinate, they less and less I want to do it. Procrastination is a challenging aspect of my working style that I need to rid myself of. Procrastination can also lead to forgetting. Wait so long, that the thought slips out of your mind In this case, my procrastination led to my forgetting to read the myths.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Post 2: This experience has definitely made me more aware of what it takes to keep an "A" in an honors class. It is important that I do not procrastinate anymore and always do the assignment that was assigned, just incase there is a pop test/quiz. From now on I am going to start putting more effort in to keeping my grade.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This experience will change the way I have approached work in this class heavily. I will now take this class more seriously as I recognize it is one of the tougher courses I have encountered this year. I will also try to procrastinate much less, which will allow me to do work much quicker and have the time to complete the work to the fullest of my ability.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My mistake was not reading the material multiple times. I read it when it was posted, but did not read it afterwords. Because of this, I remembered the stories, but not the names or small details. I mixed up a large amount of my answers because of this. Next time I will read the material at least twice, if not more, to keep the information fresh.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What I learned from this expirence was that the effort that I put into work most of the time means nothing if I dont put in an effort one hundred percent of the time. Just because it was Thanksgiving break and I was insanely busy with family activities and water polo, I have to put festivities and truthfully my break from school on hold and actually take the time to read next time. I honestly will admitt that I did not read the stories, if you could not tell by the grade I got on the test. I am sorry for going against your wishes. But I definately can say that I truly did read all of the other myths assigned to me previously, as my imperitives quiz shows.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I will not miss any opportunities like this one again. Pop quizzes are usually my strong point, and being this unprepared is both embarrassing and frustrating. I will read the text multiple times, concentrating on details and names as well as the story.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I will change the way that I approach work by giving my full effort into school work even if it is taking away my break. I am someone who gets straight A's and after that test there is now a B+ on my report card. I will certainly approach all work with all of my effort because I have to get that B off of my report card. This class used to seem like an easy A for me but now I know that I must work very hard to earn and keep that A on my report card. I know that English is a very important course and I will do the best work I can do at all times in this class, and in all of my other classes also.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i feel todays test was not that bad considering we had a week to read and study. it was a bit challenging but i am confident i did well.

from this expierence i learned that it is always best to stay on top of assignments even on break. some positives of my work style include long term memory of information and good grades. but the chalenging parts of my work style is time manegment. i have a hard time dealing with time and when to do assignments. time manegment is an imoprtant skill to have in order to succeede.

    ReplyDelete
  55. this expierence will definetley open my eyes to the difficulty of the course. it will also help me understand what kind of work to expect. this will change my approach in that i will definetley do more reading and reviewing of material we cover. my biggest mistake was reading it in the begining of break and not reviewing much afterwards. this can easily be fixed through more work and devotion to the work

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am actually confident in my abilities over passing this test, since I did read the myths. I will admit, however, that I only read them the day before, so I obviously had the advantage of memory. If I ever had one of the Seven Sins to work with to my advantages, it would be Sloth. I have a good, no GREAT standing in this class, otherwise, there is no need to change what is already working for me. Reading is one of my fine-tuned crafts in literature, so to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This experience only made me realize how fortunate I am for my laziness. By reading the myths at the last minute, I have a full memory of the stories for the next day. Keen memory pays off. This isn't the first time something like this paid off for me, it actually happened to me in many previous occasions, to the better of my grade in this class. From what I've learned today, that probably isn't a good idea, but it works way to well for me, I'm afraid. Sometimes it is the most unusual of ways that works, but I don't know if I can keep this up. Is it possible to describe myself as a lazy hardworker? Certainly not for most people, but in my case, certainly yes. I guess a laid-back hardworker is more suitable. Honestly, I am pretty comfortable with my work ethics.

    ReplyDelete
  58. This experience taught me to be prepared for class everyday and to know my material at the best of my ability. I was not prepared for class on Monday therefore I deserve the consequence of a bad grade. Now I need to take what I have learned and apply it to my life.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I need to start working harder in class and putting forth 100% of my effort. Being unprepared is an experience I would not like to go through again, so I will do my best to come to class with all of my materials and my homework ready.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I learned that although a read the stories i knew them pretty well, it was hard for me to remember who belonged to what story. Next time I have to find a way to remember who did what. However I think I did better at reading and comprehending the story when I went through it with a highlighter.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Next time i am told to read a story, i will make sure that I can also remember who did what before I come to class. Also I will read the stories with a highlighter more often because I believe that I did much better at comprehending the stories.
