Blog Assignment Six

Today we began our presentation of the deities and their archetypes. Sooooooooooooooo
Any revelations? Tell me what strikes you about the way the Greeks looked at the experience of being human. What do these archetypes say about humanity? How hard is a thesis?

Only one post please but make sure it is insightful and reflective.

  1. Alexander Hoover: What strikes me about the way that Greeks looked at the experience of being human is how they created a whole mythological realm of Gods and Goddesses that are based off of human characteristics. I also find it fascinating that each God/Goddess preform actions based on their emotions, except their sense of emotion is greater than ours. The Gods are what humanity is meant to look at and form individual ideas and base their lives off of the choices of the Gods. A thesis is not abnormally hard, but it is not easy.

  2. I was struck by how the Gods and Goddesses are examples of human emotions but really on a deeper level, like an example of what can happen if you get overcome with envy, or blinded by love, etc. I was also fascinated that the Greeks were accepting of nearly all emotions, feeling, and actions, which surprised me. In our society today, things they looked upon as acceptable or okay are completely shunned by us. These archetypes say that humanity is complex, with not one set denotation but rather countless connotations, and is open to interpretation. Forming a thesis is not difficult for me, but I think you have to take some time to concentrate and see the big picture of what you are going off of for your thesis.

  4. I must agree with Alissa and Alex, it struck me on how the gods showed plenty of examples of human emotions. What also struck me was about the way the Greeks looked at the experience of being human. They looked at it as if there was nothing really wrong with the feelings the human society showed. However, in present days, some character traits, which are held in present society, are looked downed upon. Personally, I believe that these archetypes state great characteristics the human society holds today. If the gods did not look at it wrong, why should we? I mean after all, they were gods. Now, after class today, I believe that a thesis is not complicated to come up with. Most people try to over think it to the point where it becomes not as good. Where when you keep it basic and simple, it tends to come out better.

  5. What strikes me about the Gods and Goddesses is that they are portayed as "real" humans, and not like the Gods we usually think about. The Greeks looked at the experience of being human as holy, complex, important, and one of the highest forms of life. The Greek gods and goddesses are "more human" than human, in other words they face harsher, tougher, greater situations. The Greek Gods portray every different type of person which shows their acceptance towards the different types of people. Thesis sentences are extremely tough to write, in my perspective, because I have to figure out how to display my theme in the sentence without layering facts and opinions. To write an effective thesis statement, I just have to concentrate and make sure what I'm trying to show the reader, is a universal statement.

  6. I think it was interesting to gain more insight on how the Gods reacted to different situations. By using such extreme examples and making them stories of how the different god would act on different feelings really sends a point across. Like Hera making Hercules kill all of his family because she was jealous sought revenge. A human probably wouldn't react to jealous as enthusiasticly as she did. However, learning these different stories where the consequences of the gods actions are so abstract, illustrates such strong feelings the gods had, and all their emotions are the same as those of a human. I think that these archetypes allow for different perspectives and outlooks on different trials and situations in life. I also think that when the archetype is clear, the thesis is not all that hard to do because almost any feeling anyone will ever experience is universal, and everyone else will know exactly how they feel.

  7. I agree with Madeline learning about the Greeks is interesting to begin with. Buyt the stories sets examples of how the Greeks react to human feelings. For example today we learned about jelousy, and how the greek god killed his entire family beceause of the emotion that overwhemled them and through revenge his family ended up dead. I think the greek gods were our example of how humans react except, the gods took it to an extreme level because they were not human.
I believe the thesis is not hard when the archetype is understood. If the archetype is comprehended, simple, and clear to the point then the thesis should be easy to right becuase it is just a general statement of the archetype.

  8. Learing about the gods was interesting because most of the characteristics were given to them by people who lived thousands of years ago. This makes some of the gods' characteristics unusual by todays standards. What strikes me most is that people who were gay were more accepted and mostly brave people were looked upon as being great or heroic. This shows that humantity has changed since the Greeks were around, such as our understanding of life and the world around us. A thesis would be difficult because it is difficult to understand what the Greeks wanted the specific god to be like in their personality or traits.

  9. I agree with Cody, I think that people were more tolerant back in the days because as I now know, Apollo was bisexual, and he is a very powerful god. I think gods were worshiped based on their accomplshments more than their appearance or personality. I like the fact that Athena did not care much about being a "woman" but more she cared more about being a great person in general, and she did accomplish many things. I think that the archaetypes tell us to be more tolerant of people because they might be very wise, or they may have great qualities, but we will never be able to see that if we do not get a chance to know them. I think I have more of an idea of what the thesis should be now that I have heard some examples from the groups that have presented.

  10. Its amazing how the greeks made gods so much like humans. The emotions such as jelousy and anger the gods portray show the human aspects and flaws of their personalities. Most gods personalities were an extreme which in turn made them violent. This shows how The greeks idea of being human is just a toned down version of one of their gods. Because we all have flaws and act crazy sometimes. The thesis was easy to develop because the archetype already showed a general idea we only had to put it into context.

  11. It is incredible how much that the Greek gods represent human life. Their actions and reactions are similar to ours. It is amazing how there is another world based on fictional characters that are just like us. The situations the gods are put through is more concentrated and tedious than our everyday tasks, but they still symbolize our life.

  12. Going into the project I did not think the gods acted like humans. The gods act like humans by showing personalities. The gods made many mistakes like humans and most of the mistakes were caused by an emotion. The thesis was not hard to write. It was challenging not to use people or one in the thesis.

  13. What strikes me the most about the Greek Gods and Godesses is that they are treated as actual human beings. For example, Apollo has many character foils that show his true personality and his different emotions and reactions to a different situation. Archetypes tell that the Greek Gods and Godesses are just like humans. The archetypes give the readers a chance to relate to a character in the different stories. Writing a thesis is very difficult because one must relate to the subject and make the thesis universal at the same time. MS G ROCKS!!!!! :D

  14. It has become obvious so far that the gods have the same personalities as humans do. Gods can be used for a better example in a situation than humans can, because gods are so similar to humans. The archetypes of the gods say that humaity is similar to the gods lives and that the gods were probably some of the first models for humans, which they still are today. Many humans can relate to one or more god, that is how much of a model that the gods are to humans. Also a thesis is easy, if you just think about it, because the gods are so similar to humans.

  15. I always found mythology amazingly interesting and appealing but after the presentations today, I was even more awed at how the gods reacted to simple life situations. They were just so human. The simplest awards and gifts made them happy and the bleakest things made them angry. The only problem is they handled their emotions so much more differently than us. When they were blissful, they put rainbows in the sky and when they were filled with hatred, they struck the Earth with lightning and made the ground shake. But they handled all their feelings as any one person would, except in such greater levels. These gods acted the way they did so they we could learn from them. Humanity is just part of life and it is all normal. A thesis is not necessarily hard but making it universal and a general statement of life is a little difficult.

  16. After hearing a few groups today, I realized that gods are really just the most extreme humans. Apollo was bisexual and yet completely manly and looked up to as a war leader. In this day and age, that is completely contradicting and somewhat unheard of. Our goddess, Hera, took revenge and jealousy to a whole different level when she tried to kill her husband's "girlfriend's" baby, Hercules. Everything is so intense with them that it just amplifies all the aspects of a human being. I think that is what myths are really here for; they show humans' capabilities.

  17. What strikes me most about the Greek Gods and Godesses is how similar they are to humans in an emotional way. They all seem to pretend to be so great and they act as if they are all moguls, yet they still feel emotions such as hate, love, jealousy, anger, etc. The archetypes of the Gods tell us that their lives are mirror-images of our own. Their personalities and the characteristics about them establish parity with humans. The archetypes also tell us to be more tolerant and teach us lessons/morals, just as Cody and Grace mentioned. Writing a thesis is a bit hard, but if I actually put my mind to it, it is not that difficult. Especially, now that I have seen examples from other groups and know the archetypes of the Gods.

  18. The Greeks' looked at the expirence of being human in both similar and diffrent ways than we do today. It seems as if the Greek Gods in these myths go through "human" difficulties, just in an even more intense way. They expirience the same emotions, feelings, and character traits as we do, they are just way stronger than ours. The stories are outragous to us and they are not humanly possible, but they do show us that everyone feels these emotions and they make us feel at peace with our "humanness". AS for writing thesises I think that I over think thesis statements way too much. Whenever you have us write them, I naturally want to groan, when really they are so general that they are super easy. I personally try to make my thesises too specific even though they are still universal, rather than using an abstract noun.

  19. I learned that although these figures were though of as gods, many of the things they did were not "god-like", which may be the reason humans liked to look up to them. These gods did not make people feel bad for sinning but made them feel like, "well if a god did something this bad, then what I did wasn't that bad." I think this is a much more reasonable way to look up to someone because who would want to warship a perfect god who made you feel bad and imperfect all the time? I think someone who would look up to the Greek Gods would be someone more liberal than conservative, and who thinks everyone should live their own life. As for archetypes, each god fits a certain archetype we have today-jock, nerd, outcast, drama kid, etc. Because we see all of these archetypes in mythology, it tells us that each person has a reason and is part of a greater story. So far, a thesis statement has been pretty difficult for me just because I'm having trouble not using "one" or "people".

  20. Something I find interesting about the greeks is that their deities reflected human nature. It was a magical thing to be human and they placed it in a state of high importance. The diversity of the archetypes shows the different faces of a people and these various extremes show the ability to act, choose, and feel. I feel thesises are getting easier with practice. At least it seemed to be easy for this. But reflecting on that, it might have been because the gods themselves were meant to display universal ideas and emotions. They personify abstract nouns directly. These ideas that are easy to connect with and make thesises with.

  21. The Greeks were defensive when it comes to the humans. They are defensive and protective because they do not want to be inferior of the humans becuase they know they are better. Their archetypes tell me that humanity is a shameful thing, it is not good to be a human. The thesis was hard because it was hard to make it specific to Appolo and universal at the same time.

  22. what strikes me the most about the way the greeks looked at humanity is how much the gods can relate to humans. all the gods face many of the same feelings, actions and emotions as the humans did. this leads me to infer that the greeks thought of the gods not as all powerful figures to be feared but more like everyday people. the kind of archetyps the geeks show about the gods shows me that the greeks lived a very carefree lifestyle where things like homosexuality did not matter. I don't think a thesis is hard to come up with but a good thesis that can be stuck to takes more time and work.
